The radio module rewrites the file

The single most consequential spec line in this category is whether the product contains a radio — Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, proprietary 2.4GHz dongles. The electronics-accessories rule escalates fully here: a wired mouse is a modest compliance file; its wireless twin is a radio-equipment file in the EU, an FCC matter in the US, and an approvals question in most other destinations — often per module and per finished device. Buyer practice that survives contact with reality:

  • Ask which radio module is inside and whose approvals it carries. A certified module simplifies but rarely eliminates device-level obligations; "the chip is certified" is the beginning of the answer, not the end.
  • Firmware versions are part of the spec. Radio behaviour is firmware-defined; an approval tied to one firmware does not automatically cover the "improved" firmware the factory flashed last month. Pin the version in the order and check it at inspection.

At minimum, know what the device phones home to before your brand is on the box; write update responsibility into the supplier agreement for anything with firmware a customer touches.

Sourcing at lifecycle speed

The category's commercial rhythm shapes every order:

  • Connector and standard turnovers strand inventory. An accessory keyed to a fading connector is a clearance item in waiting; check where the standard sits in its cycle before committing to depth, and prefer designs that span the transition where they exist.
  • Chipset substitutions are the resin problem of electronics — same housing, different silicon, different behaviour. Pin the chipset in the spec, and have the inspection verify it (device descriptors are checkable without opening the case).
  • The sourcing calendar bites harder here because product windows are short: a holiday slip that costs a bedding order a month costs an accessory its selling window.

The per-SKU math, with approvals amortized

Approvals and testing are fixed costs against volume — which changes the landed-cost math: a device worth certifying at ten thousand units is unsellable economics at five hundred. It is the honest way to decide whether the wireless variant earns its file — or whether the wired version is this order's better business.
